Gene Therapies

Gene therapy is an emerging category of medical research that employs genes or genetic manipulation to treat or prevent deadly diseases and dangerous medical conditions. Instead of conventional drugs or surgery, gene therapies may one day allow doctors to treat a disorder by inserting a gene directly into a patient’s cells, or by replacing or editing genes that are not functioning properly. Typically, gene therapies employ a vector, such as a virus, to deliver a gene to the cells where it can have maximum therapeutic impact.
